The Man behind the Machine
Our founder and principal engineer, JL “Pepe” Espada, has been a musician for over 45 years and has played on touring bands and bar bands, has been a studio hand, and ultimately a studio owner, operator, and music producer. Pepe cut his teeth as part of the Dischord punk rock record label in the Wahington DC area, where he learned to value of the DIY approach and the importance of a collaborative process to music making.
Pepe has a bachelor's degree in Songwriting and Music Production from Berklee College of Music, completed the Mastering Accelerator mastering program, making him a bonafide Mastering Engineer, and is a member of the New Music Engineering audio engineer's workshop community.
As founder of the independent label Boneyard Records, Pepe is also the in-house producer for most of the label's acts. As an accomplished songwriter, Pepe can not only contribute instrumentally to your recordings (guitar, bass, keyboards, and vocals), but he can also assist in the song’s concept development, arrangement, and lyrics writing.
